From Dream to Dig: The Compass Pool Configurator

Marketing Initiative of the year (pool & spa)

Buying a pool should be exciting, yet homeowners often face uncertainty - guessing garden scale, technical specs, budgets, and installation disruption from brochures. We replaced this uncertainty with the Compass Pool Configurator: a free, browser-based tool enabling customers to plan, design, visualise, and price their pool before a site visit. It transforms passive research into an active, confident experience, bridging the gap between imagining a pool and confidently starting the build.

Why this entry deserves to win

The Compass Pool Configurator deserves to win Marketing Initiative of the Year because it addresses the biggest barrier in a high-consideration purchase: the gap between imagining and believing. It combines inspiration, education, transparent pricing, technical planning and lead generation in one continuous branded experience. Instead of asking customers to picture the possibility, Compass lets them plan it, see it and take the first confident step towards building it.What makes this a marketing initiative rather than simply a piece of software is the role it plays at every point in the customer journey. It attracts attention with an experience people want to try; educates without overwhelming; demonstrates the breadth and value of the Compass range; captures intent at the point of greatest engagement; produces personalised, shareable content; and gives salespeople a much more meaningful starting point.

Design information

The Compass Pool Configurator turns what was once a largely passive research journey into an involving, personalised experience. The experience is organised around three simple stages: Plan, Design and Build. In Plan, the customer can place a pool to scale within an aerial view of their own property, rotate it and design the surrounding space. Patio dimensions, plant-room position, pipe routes and garden features can all be explored. This immediately answers one of the most common early questions: “Will it fit, and how will it work in my garden?” In Design, the customer can compare pool models, shell finishes, coping choices, covers, lighting, heating, counter-current turbines, water features and more. Their choices update a responsive 3D scene and an itemised price, making a complex premium purchase easier to understand. In Build, the same design becomes an educational installation journey. A staged animation explains set-out, excavation, pool placement, backfilling, the ring beam and the surrounding patio. This makes an unfamiliar construction process visible and understandable, helping customers approach the next conversation with realistic expectations.

Technical information

The configurator was designed as a mobile-first web experience, giving customers the same intuitive journey across smartphones, tablets and desktop computers without requiring specialist software or an account. Automated usability, accessibility and responsive tests cover devices from compact mobile screens through to large desktops. Its responsive interface adapts to different screen sizes, with touch-friendly controls, clear navigation and a persistent 3D view so every choice produces immediate visual feedback. Performance is optimised for real-world mobile use, including typical 4G connections, through compressed assets, progressive loading and intelligent caching. Customers can also install it as a web app and prepare their current design for offline use, helping the experience remain reliable during home visits or in gardens where reception may be poor.
