Battersea Power Station is at the heart of one of central London’s largest, most visionary and eagerly anticipated new developments, which will see this vast 42-acre (over 8 million sq. ft) former industrial site become home to a community of homes, shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, offices and over 19 acres of public space.The £9bn project will see the creation of a vibrant, mixed-use development, a new neighbourhood and business quarter for London, and the restoration of the Grade II* listed Power Station. Our Third Space Battersea project has the pool created within a very complex structure where no two units are the same. This was designed to complement the Gehry designed Prospect Place with his eponymous studio Gehry Partners, as part of the regeneration of the iconic Giles Gilbert Scott-designed Battersea Power Station on the banks of the River Thames. This location included the iconic but hugely complex rippled white facades, punctured by large windows, that defines Prospect Place. This façade elevation formed and became the backdrop to our pool installation. Aquascapes aspired to design around this facetted and staggered façade with our design team, creating a unique “sawtooth” pool that worked well to achieve a full 20m pool swimming length in a stepped building footprint. With limited space, Aquascapes skilled team were able to accommodate the 20m long staggered swimming pool, a hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room that slotted into the complexities of the existing buildings design footprint and mirrored the ethos of design by use of reflective and iridescent materials. This exploitation of natural lighting and reflective patterns evolved to form part of the design. The juxtaposition between the existing industrial use and construction methods of the original power station, framed between the facades of the iconic power station chimneys that everyone knows and loves, creates a space that is instantly recognisable all over the world.
