Singlewell Project

Residential Indoor Pool Of The Year (Over £175k)

A luxury 10m × 5m reinforced-concrete indoor pool forming part of a complete wellness suite with bespoke spa and steam room. Designed for year-round family use, the installation combines elegant porcelain finishes with automatic water treatment, UV, environmental control and a automatic slatted cover. Close coordination with multiple contractors delivered a refined, light-filled leisure space.

Why this entry deserves to win

Singlewell deserves recognition because the finished result makes a technically complex installation appear effortless. This was not simply the construction of an indoor swimming pool. XL Pools was responsible for integrating a 10m × 5m reinforced-concrete pool alongside a bespoke spa and steam room, creating a complete private wellness environment in which each element needed to work technically and visually as part of the same space. The project required extensive coordination with multiple contractors and disciplines. One of the greatest challenges was the restricted plant room, which had to accommodate equipment serving the pool, spa and steam room alongside services belonging to other contractors. Rather than allowing this limitation to compromise the installation, our team carefully planned equipment positioning and pipework routes to create a functional plant room that remains accessible for future maintenance. Our previous experience constructing a pool for the client’s business partner also gave us a valuable understanding of the expectations for this project. We used lessons from that installation to anticipate potential issues, improve details and continually refine our approach rather than simply repeat what we had

Design information

The client wanted a luxurious indoor leisure space combining a substantial family swimming pool, bespoke spa and steam room within one cohesive environment. Having previously constructed a pool for the client’s business partner, XL Pools understood the expected standard and used lessons from that project to anticipate requirements and refine the design. The 10m × 5m pool provides generous swimming and relaxation space, with depths from 1.1m to 1.8m. Large-format porcelain tiles were selected to create a clean, contemporary finish and visual continuity throughout the pool hall. Practicality was equally important. We incorporated a concealed cave pit for the automatic slatted cover, keeping the mechanism out of sight while maximising heat retention and reducing evaporation. Pool, spa and steam room services were carefully coordinated to create an integrated wellness space that feels considered as a whole rather than a collection of individual features.

Technical information

The 11m × 5.5m freeboard pool was constructed in reinforced concrete to BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2), with depths of 1.1m–2.2m and an approximate 100m³ water volume. The 10m × 5m freeboard pool was constructed in reinforced concrete to BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2), incorporating 100mm insulation. Water depth ranges from 1.1m to 1.8m, with an approximate volume of 72.5m³. A hydrostatic relief valve and 600mm twin-wall groundwater inspection chamber provide protection against groundwater pressure and allow future monitoring and maintenance. Filtration is provided by a Waterco 24" Micron side-mount filter with glass media, paired with a Zodiac FloPro 1HP single-speed circulation pump. The system delivers approximately 13.7m³/h, achieving a 5.3-hour turnover with a filtration rate of 49m³/m²/h. This combination was selected to provide reliable, effective filtration for the pool volume while maintaining appropriate hydraulic performance. Circulation comprises two Certikin 6" main drains with safety grilles, two Certikin wide-mouth skimmers and two 1½" return outlets. The hydraulically balanced main drains provide redundancy, with each capable of accommodating the required flow should the other become obstructed. Class C PVC suction and return pipework has a 55mm internal diameter and was pressure-tested to 15psi. Water quality is automatically controlled by a Bayrol pH and chlorine dosing system, selected to provide continual monitoring and consistent chemical control. This is supplemented by a Pool Technologie Mini UV 80W system, providing secondary treatment to assist water clarity and chloramine reduction. Pool water heating is transferred through a Bowman 120EC heat exchanger, with heat generated by two domestic Vaillant air-source heat pumps and an electric boiler backup installed by the client’s specialist contractor. The heating system is interlocked with filtration to prevent operation without adequate water flow. A Heatstar XF EC 3000 Super Plus provides specialist environmental control for the pool hall. The system, combined with insulated underfloor ductwork, manages air temperature, humidity and condensation while recovering energy, protecting both the building fabric and internal environment. An automatic slatted cover is concealed within a cave pit, preserving the clean appearance of the pool while substantially reducing evaporation and heat loss when the pool is not in use. One of the principal technical challenges was the restricted plant room. Despite XL Pools raising the spatial requirements during the design process, the final room had to accommodate equipment serving the pool, spa and steam room alongside other building services. Careful equipment positioning, pipework routing and coordination with other trades enabled us to create a functional and maintainable installation within the limited footprint. The project also required continuous coordination with numerous specialist contractors. Having previously completed a pool for the client’s business partner, we were able to apply lessons learned, anticipate potential interface issues and resolve them before they affected the programme. Large-format porcelain finishes achieve a minimum R10 slip rating in relevant wet areas. Electrical works were completed by an NICEIC-registered electrician to BS 7671, with ≤30mA RCD protection, IP-rated equipment enclosures and equipotential bonding of metallic components. The completed system combines robust reinforced-concrete construction, carefully designed hydraulics, automatic water treatment, secondary UV treatment, energy-conscious heating, specialist environmental control and a concealed cover system to create a high-performing indoor pool designed for reliable long-term operation.
