Residential Pool Refurbishment Project of the year

This project was a complete refurbishment of an existing swimming pool, transforming a dated and enclosed pool area into a clean, contemporary and much more open outdoor space. The pool was extended, new corner steps added and the old bag liner replaced with a durable on-site liner with a 3D mosaic effect. The project also included new porcelain paving, a safety cover, hot tub, changing room and plant building.

Why this entry deserves to win

This project deserves to win because it demonstrates what can be achieved by completely rethinking an existing swimming pool rather than simply replacing what was already there. The challenge was to make an ageing pool feel brand-new while transforming a previously enclosed and cluttered area into an open, elegant and functional part of the garden. By extending the pool, introducing new corner steps, replacing the dated liner, redesigning the surrounding areas and carefully integrating the new hot tub, changing room and plant building, we have created a space that feels considerably larger and more connected to the garden. The finished pool is deliberately clean and understated. The mosaic-effect liner gives the water the appearance of a fully tiled pool, while the porcelain surround, brickwork and mature landscaping complement the existing property rather than competing with it.Safety was also central to the project, with the installation of a safety cover providing the family with greater peace of mind when the pool is not in use. What makes this project particularly rewarding is the transformation. The pool has not simply been refurbished; the entire experience of using the garden has been improved. It is now a stylish,

Design information

The design was driven by the customer’s desire to make the existing swimming pool feel completely new while opening up the surrounding garden and creating a safer, more enjoyable space for the family. The original pool was enclosed by extensive planting and trees, making the area feel smaller and more restricted. We redesigned the space to create a much more open feel while retaining the established character of the garden. The pool was extended in length and redesigned with new corner steps, giving it a cleaner, more contemporary appearance. The original bag liner was removed and replaced with a high-quality on-site liner. Its 3D design creates the appearance of individual mosaic tiles once filled, giving the water a high-end tiled appearance with a durable finish. New porcelain paving was installed throughout the pool surround, connecting the pool with the garden and existing house. The old hot tub was replaced with a new spa, while a purpose-built timber changing room and plant building were added. New brick-built steps provide access towards the tennis court, completing a more open, practical and cohesive outdoor space.

Technical information

The refurbishment involved removing the existing bag liner and preparing the pool for the new on-site liner system. The pool was extended in length and new corner steps were formed as part of the redesign. The new pool finish is an on-site liner with a three-dimensional mosaic effect, creating the visual appearance of a tiled pool once filled while providing a durable and practical finish. Circulation is provided by a 1hp Hayward circulation pump, working in conjunction with a SuperPool 24” filter system incorporating AFM filter media. Water treatment is supplemented by an Electro Quantum UV system, helping to provide high-quality, clear and hygienic pool water. Heating is provided by a Norsup P26X/32 air source heat pump, providing an efficient method of maintaining comfortable swimming temperatures. A new safety cover was incorporated into the pool design, reflecting the customer’s priority of providing a safer environment for their children when the pool is not in use. The wider refurbishment included new porcelain paving throughout the pool surround, a new hot tub, a purpose-built changing room and plant/filter building, and new brick-built steps connecting the pool area with the tennis court. The project required careful consideration of the existing pool structure, changes in level and the relationship between the pool, garden, house, hot tub and tennis court. The result is a fully modernised pool installation with upgraded filtration, water treatment, heating and safety, while retaining the character of the wider property.
