14. Pool & Spa Team of the year

Established over 20 years ago, Aquascapes team of dedicated professionals specialise in the global design and build of both Commercial and Residential wet leisure facilities, designing and crafting iconic and elite Pools, Spas and Wellness Sanctuary’s.

Why this entry deserves to win

Established over 20 years ago by Chartered Consulting Engineer Sean Connelly who specialises in both Civil and Mechanical fields of engineering, Aquascapes have evolved into an accomplished and world-renowned swimming pool design consultancy. In addition to design and consultancy works, Aquascapes are unique in the fact that we also build swimming pools and other leisure facilities. Not only do Aquascapes deliver pools, spas and wellness facilities but also, guided by RIBA — the ‘Royal Institute of British Architects’ definitive model for the design and construction process — Aquascapes work from concept to completion. With a highly skilled team of professional installers from multiple trades, Aquascapes conduct the complete fit out of sophisticated leisure schemes. As a result, we have forged a respected, widely recognised, and highly sought-after brand.Aquascapes meticulous standards and pragmatic attention to detail are at the heart of all our designs. Schemes are fully documented from concept to completion, in full compliance with the latest guidelines and regulations. Prepared using state of the art in-house AutoCAD facilities, our service includes full liaison with local planning officers, architects, other building contracto

Technical information

Following the UK energy crisis, swimming pools and spas are becoming more expensive to operate due to their high energy consumption. To reduce costs and carbon emissions, Aquascapes include a number of initiatives in our projects to make our wet leisure facilities more energy efficient. Pool and Spa water needs to be continually heated in order to overcome the cooling effect of evaporation and maintain required temperatures. Water must also be continuously filtered and treated, so it is not surprising that pools are significant users of energy. Wastage in the construction industry is widespread and well-studied. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs reported that the UK produced 222.2 million tonnes of waste in 2018, with 62% of this attributed to the Construction, Demolition and Excavation (CDE) industry. (Government, Statistics, UK Waste Data, June 2023). To reduce the quantity of waste and minimise the need for recycling even further, we must move towards sustainable construction practices and a circular economy where buildings, components and materials are used more than once. In the leisure industry, sustainability can be achieved by reusing as much waste heat and water as possible. Aquascapes projects include and benefit from a range of sustainability initiatives, including the following: • Water consumption can be reduced by up to 50% by introducing Hydrospin prefilters. • Using UV disinfection and dichlorination which reduces water renewal by up to 60% and subsequently reduces power consumption. • By insulating pools to reduce water consumption by way of evaporation, reducing heat loss and associated energy consumption. • The installation of an insulated pool cover allows us to reduce the amount of chemicals needed to treat the water and prevent algae blooms. • Reduction of electrical consumption using inverter technology and smart control of water quality, using turbidity / chlorine measurement analysis. • Reusing filter backwash water for irrigation and toilet flushing etc. after dechlorinating. • Reusing waste heat rejected by air-Conditioners to heat pools in summer. • Collection and storage of rainwater (Rainwater Harvesting) in attenuation tanks which is reused for backwash replenishment and to top-up pools, reducing and minimising water consumption. • Recycling solar energy into electrical energy by using PV cells and Tesla power walls to run filtration equipment and Air Source Heat Pumps. • Using solar cells on rooftops, we harvest solar energy which can be used to heat pools using a heat exchanger. • Using recycled glass as filter media for enhanced filtration, as opposed to sand. This has the potential to achieve water filtration down to 1 micron. • Using turbidity sensors to analyse water filtration quality, along with Building Management Systems to intelligently control pump speeds to save energy and reduce chemical dosage when water quality is good, and bather levels are low. This achieves better filtration quality with less chemical consumption.
