The Garden Swim – A Recessed Jacuzzi® AquaTrainer Swim Spa
Swim Spa Project of the year
This bespoke Jacuzzi® AquaTrainer 19 ft swim spa transformed a family garden into a year-round place to swim, exercise and connect. Recessed into a purpose-built concrete pit with drainage, crane installation, bespoke decking and a roll-on/roll-off safety cover, the spa blends beautifully into the garden. With its AquaTrainer swim jet system and self-cleaning technology, it delivers the experience of swimming at home within a compact footprint.
Why this entry deserves to win
This project deserves to win because it combines beautiful design, technically demanding installation and an exceptional customer outcome. The challenge was to introduce a substantial 19 ft swim spa into an established domestic garden without allowing it to dominate the space. Our team excavated and prepared the site, constructed the concrete base and blockwork pit with drainage, craned the AquaTrainer into position and recessed it into the landscape. Bespoke decking and a roll-on/roll-off safety cover complete the installation, creating a finish that feels considered, elegant and genuinely part of the garden. The result gives the owners something a conventional garden pool could not easily achieve within the available footprint: the ability to swim continuously against a current, exercise, relax and enjoy the water with friends and family throughout the year. What makes the project particularly special, however, is the customer experience behind it. The owners originally discovered us through friends and neighbours who had purchased a hot tub from us 18 years earlier and still return to us for servicing. They first experienced a swim spa at our showroom in the pouring rain in January and immediately saw its potential.Thei
Design information
The design was inspired by the customers’ desire to enjoy proper swimming at home without the footprint of a traditional swimming pool. Having experienced the AquaTrainer in our showroom, they could immediately see how a swim spa could transform the way they used their garden. We worked closely with them to ensure the finished installation felt integrated into the landscaping rather than simply placed within it. Our installation team excavated the site and constructed a purpose-built concrete base, block walls and drainage pit before craning the 19 ft Jacuzzi® AquaTrainer into position. Recessing the swim spa created a clean, elegant finish and made access from the surrounding garden feel natural. Bespoke decking was then installed around the spa, complemented by a practical roll-on/roll-off safety cover. The result is a beautifully integrated garden feature that gives the family a dedicated space for swimming, exercise, relaxation and time together throughout the year, while retaining the character and usability of their existing garden.
Technical information
The centrepiece of the project is a 19 ft AquaTrainer swim spa, within the Jacuzzi® portfolio, selected to give the customers a genuine swimming experience within a much smaller footprint than a conventional swimming pool. At approximately 5.59m long x 2.36m wide x 1.34m deep, with a water capacity of approximately 9,000 litres, the AquaTrainer provides a generous swim area while remaining achievable within a domestic garden. The configuration incorporates two hydrotherapy seats, three high-flow swim jets and approximately 23–24 hydrotherapy jets, allowing the spa to combine swimming, aquatic exercise and relaxation. The AquaTrainer swim-current system was particularly important to the brief. Its high-flow jets create resistance that enables the user to swim continuously in place, effectively providing the experience of swimming distance without requiring the length of a traditional pool. The model’s self-cleaning system was another major reason for its specification. The system combines floor vacuuming, surface skimming and pressurised micro-filtration, reducing the burden of routine water care and making the swim spa particularly practical for frequent family use. The greatest technical challenge, however, was the installation itself. The customers wanted the substantial 19 ft swim spa to feel like an integral part of their landscaped garden rather than a freestanding piece of equipment. Our installation team therefore excavated the site and constructed a purpose-built concrete base and concrete-block pit, incorporating drainage and appropriate access for the spa and its equipment. Given the size and weight of the AquaTrainer, the unit then had to be carefully craned into the prepared pit. Recessing the spa created a much more elegant relationship between the water and surrounding garden, but it also made future accessibility an important consideration. The installation was planned to retain the access required for servicing and ongoing maintenance. Finally, bespoke decking was constructed around the recessed spa, creating a seamless transition into the garden, while a roll-on/roll-off safety cover provides security, insulation and ease of everyday use. The finished project demonstrates that installing a large performance swim spa in a domestic garden requires far more than simply delivering the product. Groundworks, drainage, structural preparation, crane access, future serviceability, safety and landscaping all had to be resolved as one integrated installation. The result is a technically complex project that appears beautifully simple: a full-size swimming and hydrotherapy experience seamlessly incorporated into the customers’ garden.
