PRESTBURY PROJECT
Swim Spa Project of the year
Having contacted the prospective client who was selling a Classic Car that I wanted, he had been asked if a part exchange with a pool or hot tub would be considered! The family had actively been looking at pools so we agreed to meet on site. The large house in Prestbury is set back from the road, the drive and parking areas had recently been freshly laid tarmac. A crane could not be used to lift a spa or pool over the house. Therefore we had to look at other options.
Why this entry deserves to win
The end result has provided the family with everything that they could possibly need. The area before was unused due to the sloping garden, now it houses a large swim spa for the family to enjoy, their existing hot tub complements the swim spa, and the new Gym, Sauna, changing room and shower room have made a wonderful pool building. The view from the house, across their ponds and garden now finishes with a beautiful pool, hot tub and pool building. This was the most technically challenging project that we have done, the end result was well worth the effort, and everyone was incredibly happy with the outcome. It was a pleasure to work with these people, and we got the Classic Car as well!
Design information
After doing a thorough site survey we work out that a large self contained 7m x 2.4m swim spa could be delivered on its side if it was protected. The location was chosen at the bottom of the garden to make use of a sloping area that was unused. The clients existing hot tub was to be relocated to this position and a new gym building erected to include a sauna, shower and changing facilities. This was completed by another contractor. We worked closely with the Pool Building contractor to ensure that all measurements were correct and that the Swim Spa and hot tub would be level in the new decked area. The installation took around four months to complete and has created a stunning area for the family and friends to unwind and relax. The children are loving the swim spa.
Technical information
This was the most complex installation that we have attempted. The distance from the front of the house to the chosen site was around 100 metres. We had to work out a way to manually move a large 2 ton swim spa across this distance on a sloping site. We needed a cunning plan! Firstly the base was laid for the swim spa to sit on, this involved levelling the ground and digging out the slope to create a flat area for the foundations. The Gym/Pool House team started construction of their base and used ground screws to create a framework for their building to go on. Once this was completed we were able to make the delivery. To protect the newly laid driveway we laid plywood sheeting to the area and built a large platform onto which the swim spa would be lowered once it had passed down the side of the house. The side access had only 10cm of clearance and was curved. We built a protective case around the swim spa to ensure that it was not damaged. We used a Telehandler to help “drive” the swim spa around the side of the house and onto the platform to then enable it to be lowered flat. Specialist lifting equipment was used to do this safely. This took an entire day. On day 2, the swim spa was manoeuvred across the garden manually, and then lowered into the final position using a large A Frame. Six bodies were needed at times to complete the installation. Once the swim spa was in place, the clients hot tub was relocated into position and both units were then wired up and wet tested. The ONYX TURBINE swim spa uses a 4.5kw 3 phase motor with variable speeds. On Level 8, the water flow is 3.1 metres per second. Heating comes from a 3kw built in electrical heater. Once the protective casing was removed the cabinet was removed from the swim spa and this was lined with a further 50mm of Kingspan type insulation. The floor was also insulated. This method reduces the energy bills by over 50%. Once all this was done then the final decking covering was laid and the fencing completed. The result is stunning. This has been the most complex installation that we have done. The customer and his family are very happy with the result.
