ENTRY DETAILS
Tenaya Projects Collaboration
Sunken or Semi-Sunken Hot Tub Project of the year
A HotSpring Limelight Flash integrated into a wider garden leisure project by Tenaya Projects. Designed as a sunken installation from the outset, the project brought together Tenaya's construction expertise and HTO's specialist spa knowledge to create a clean, beautifully integrated result without compromising drainage, ventilation, cover operation or future service access.
Why this entry deserves to win
At first glance, the strongest thing about this project is simply how good the finished installation looks. The Flash sits naturally within the landscaping, with the sunken design allowing the surrounding garden and views to remain the focus. What makes the project more interesting is everything the finished photographs don't show.A hot tub is a live, electrically powered appliance containing a considerable volume of water, with pumps, controls and other components that will need to remain accessible throughout its life. Sinking one into a beautifully finished garden can hide the cabinet, but it cannot make those practical requirements disappear. The success of this project came from Tenaya Projects and HTO bringing different expertise to the same job. Tenaya understood the wider construction and the standard of finish its client wanted. HTO understood what had to remain beneath and behind that finish for the spa to work properly over the long term. That collaboration influenced details ranging from drainage and ventilation to removable service access and cover-lifter clearance. It also determined the sequence of the installation, with the spa positioned first, the surrounding construction completed around it and HTO returning af
Design information
The hot tub formed part of a much wider endeavour being undertaken by Tenaya Projects for its client, which also included a gym and golf simulator. The spa was intended to be sunken from the outset, with its position already identified as part of the overall scheme and chosen to make the most of the surrounding views. HTO worked directly with Luke at Tenaya rather than the homeowner. The client was already familiar with the HotSpring Limelight Flash and particularly liked its all-seater layout. We also provided an alternative model for comparison so that the choice could be considered properly, but the Flash remained their preference and suited the space available. Because the spa was being incorporated closely into the surrounding decking, the design had to work on two levels. Visually, the aim was for the hot tub to sit naturally within the finished landscaping rather than look like something added afterwards. Practically, it still had to function as a hot tub that could be covered, maintained, repaired and eventually removed if necessary. That meant HTO and Tenaya working together before and during construction. Our role was to provide the spa-specific requirements that needed to be accommodated within Tenaya's design, while Tenaya
Technical information
The spa is a HotSpring Limelight Flash, an all-seater hot tub selected after comparison with alternative models and chosen to suit both the client's preferences and the space already allocated within the wider project. With a sunken installation, the technical requirements extend well beyond positioning the spa. HTO advised Tenaya on the structural support required for a filled hot tub, together with drainage, ventilation, electrical provision and the clearances needed around the spa. The surrounding structure could not simply be built tightly against the cabinet. Particular attention was given to future access. The decking needed to incorporate removable sections so an engineer could reach the equipment compartment containing the pumps and control equipment. HTO was checking this provision immediately before commissioning. Cover operation was considered during the build too, with Natalie at HTO liaising with Luke over the depth of the surrounding decking and the clearance required for the cover lifter. The installation was therefore sequenced around the wider construction project. HTO first delivered the Flash and moved it into its final position. Access involved negotiating several tight corners using a sled before transferring the spa onto a spa dolly for the longer journey across the grass. Once the spa was correctly positioned, Tenaya completed the decking and surrounding works around it. HTO then returned to check the installation and commission the spa. There were no significant unforeseen problems during the project. Rather than being an installation defined by overcoming a last-minute difficulty, it demonstrates the value of addressing the technical requirements at the planning stage and maintaining communication between the specialist supplier and contractor throughout the build.
