The Epic Project

Above Ground Hot Tub Project of the year (Over £10k)

A striking above ground installation of a Marquis Crown Epic, creating a luxurious private wellness retreat at the base of Holcombe Hill. With restricted access to the property, the hot tub was carefully craned into position before being integrated into a beautifully designed enclosed structure. The finished project combines premium hydrotherapy, privacy and year round usability, transforming the space into an impressive home spa sanctuary.

Why this entry deserves to win

This entry deserves to win because it represents far more than the installation of a premium hot tub. It demonstrates how careful planning, technical expertise, product knowledge and collaboration can overcome a challenging site and transform it into an exceptional private wellness space. What makes this project particularly special is the finished result compared with the complexity involved in achieving it. The Marquis Crown Epic now sits beautifully within its enclosed structure at the base of Holcombe Hill, appearing completely integrated into the design. However, achieving this seamless finish required considerable planning.Restricted access meant that a conventional delivery was impossible. A crane lift was required, but the surrounding structures created further restrictions to the lifting operation. Elements of the structure had to be removed or deliberately left incomplete to create sufficient clearance. The installation sequence was critical: the base and services had to be prepared, the crane operation completed and the Epic positioned accurately before the enclosure and roof could be completed. Once the roof was installed, there would have been no opportunity to repeat the lift. This required close coordination be

Design information

The overall theme was to create a luxurious, private, year round spa retreat that would feel completely integrated into the customer’s outdoor space rather than simply adding a hot tub to the garden. We worked closely with the customer from the outset to determine the best position for the Marquis Crown Epic, taking into consideration privacy, usability, access and the enclosed structure that would ultimately surround the spa. This project required particularly careful planning because access to the property was extremely restricted. A conventional delivery was not possible, meaning the Crown Epic had to be craned into its final position. Even the crane operation presented challenges due to the limited access and surrounding structures. The installation therefore had to be completed in a very specific sequence. Sections of the existing structure were temporarily removed to create the necessary clearance for the crane lift. The hot tub was then carefully lifted over the property and precisely positioned onto the prepared base. Only once the spa was safely installed could the surrounding structure and roof be completed.

Technical information

The spa specified and supplied by Marquise Spas was a Marquis Crown Epic with the optional MicroSilk hydrotherapy system. The customer wanted a premium hot tub that offered exceptional hydrotherapy, strong visual impact and extensive lighting, while complementing the high quality enclosed structure being created around it. • Dimensions: 229cm x 229cm x 90cm • Water capacity: approximately 1,476 litres • Seating: 6 massage positions • Therapy jets: 53 • H.O.T. Zones: 5 High Output Therapy zones • Pumps: 2 high performance jet pumps with a combined maximum flow of approximately 1,817 litres per minute • Filtration: Twin filter system • Electrical requirement: UK 32A supply • Dry weight: approximately 386kg • Filled weight: approximately 1,814kg • Full foam insulation • ABS base and reinforced acrylic shell construction • MQTouch touchscreen control • Dynamic Flow Control • SmartClean programmable filtration • ConstantClean+ water management system • CD ozone with Mazzei injection • Regal Whitewater4 high flow therapy jet • Four point backlit water features • Jewel LED lighting • MicroSilk hydrotherapy system One of the principal reasons for selecting the Crown Epic was its exceptionally varied hydrotherapy layout. Rather than providing six virtually identical seats, the Epic is designed around different massage experiences. Its 53 therapy jets are arranged across five H.O.T. Zones, with a combination of jet sizes and massage actions designed to target areas including the back, lumbar region, shoulders, legs and feet. The specialist seating includes Deep Tissue, Shiatsu and Relaxation massage positions, allowing different users to select a therapy experience to suit them. The Regal Whitewater 4 jet provides particularly powerful leg and foot therapy, while Dynamic Flow Control allows the user to direct water flow towards the area where greater massage intensity is required. This made the Epic particularly appropriate for a customer investing in a permanent home wellness environment rather than simply purchasing a recreational hot tub. MicroSilk was an important part of the customer’s brief and one of the reasons the Marquis Crown range was selected. The system produces a cloud of extremely fine oxygen-rich micro bubbles, creating a very different bathing experience from conventional hydrotherapy jets. This allows the customer to choose between powerful jet driven hydrotherapy and the softer MicroSilk bathing experience. It significantly broadened the functionality of the spa and helped us meet the customer’s requirement for a genuine wellness focused installation. The customer particularly liked the contemporary design of the Crown Collection and wanted lighting to form part of the finished atmosphere. Jewel LED lighting and the four point backlit fountains create a dramatic appearance after dark and work particularly well within the enclosed structure. The Crown Epic therefore became part of the architectural design of the room rather than appearing to be a hot tub that had simply been placed underneath a shelter. The Epic uses two filters together with Marquis ConstantClean+ and SmartClean technology. ConstantClean+ integrates Vortex filtration, in-line sanitation and CD ozone with Mazzei injection, while SmartClean provides programmable filtration management. With approximately 1,476 litres of water and a stated combined pump flow of up to 1,817 litres per minute. This is a theoretical pump flow calculation rather than a claim that the complete spa water is fully filtered every 49 seconds. Actual filtration turnover is determined by the filtration programme, system resistance, plumbing, filter condition and operating flow. This distinction is important when assessing the engineering specification. The greatest technical challenge was not the spa itself but physically getting a 229cm-square, approximately 386kg Crown Epic into its final location. Access was extremely restricted and there was no practical route to manoeuvre the spa conventionally into the garden. A crane lift was therefore planned. The positioning of the surrounding structures created an additional complication, and parts of the structure had to be removed or left incomplete to provide sufficient clearance for the lift. The sequence of works became critical. The prepared base and electrical requirements had to be ready first; crane access and lifting clearances were then established; the Crown Epic was lifted over the property and carefully lowered onto the prepared base. Only after the spa had been correctly positioned, connected and checked could the surrounding enclosure and roof be completed. Had the roof structure been completed first, installation of the spa would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, without dismantling significant elements of the finished building. This project therefore demonstrates considerably more than the supply of a premium hot tub. Marquise Spas had to consider product specification, electrical requirements, structural clearances, crane logistics, final servicing access and the order in which multiple trades completed their work. The Crown Epic was the best option because it delivered everything contained within the customer’s brief premium Crown styling, six position hydrotherapy, 53 jets, five H.O.T. Zones, sophisticated water management, extensive lighting and, crucially, the requested MicroSilk system while creating a centrepiece worthy of the bespoke enclosed wellness space.
