Infinity Project
Sunken or Semi-Sunken Hot Tub Project of the year
A UK-first installation of the Australian-manufactured Aqua Technics Infinity, installed semi-sunken to create a contemporary year-round hot tub within an existing patio renovation. The 3m circular design provides 360° bench seating, eight water and eight air jets and dedicated inverter heating. Its raised profile, Mauritian slate finishes and curved lighting transformed an underused patio into a family and social space.
Why this entry deserves to win
We believe this project deserves recognition because it takes a different approach to what a semi-sunken hot tub can be.This was the first Aqua Technics Infinity of its kind installed in the UK. Beyond its distinctive design, Nano-Graphene strengthens the composite structure, while Pool ColourGuard® protects its appearance long-term. Combined with eight water jets, eight air jets and full perimeter seating, it offers the benefits of a hot tub, plunge pool and compact pool in one.Inside, the continuous 400mm bench provides seating around the entire perimeter, with eight water jets and eight air jets providing hydrotherapy. The circular layout also makes it particularly social, with everyone seated around a shared central space. One of its strongest features is versatility. The client can heat it for use as a hot tub throughout the year, use it at a lower temperature as a plunge pool, or even use it as a cold plunge. This gives the family considerably more flexibility from one installation. It was also a late addition to a renovation where the client already had a clear vision for the finished garden. Despite this, the semi-sunken design, surrounding finishes and curved lighting make the Infinity feel like part of the origi
Design information
The Infinity was introduced late in the client's wider renovation, so it needed to work with an outdoor design that was already largely established. Rather than fully sinking the spa, we used its structural 200mm edge beam to install it semi-sunken, making the circular form a deliberate feature of the patio. The 3m footprint retained valuable outdoor space while the 400mm bench around the entire perimeter provides generous seating for family and entertaining. Eight water and eight air jets provide hydrotherapy, with Air source heating allowing year-round use. Mauritian slate finishes were continued around the installation, while curved strip lighting follows the softer shape of the spa and creates a particularly effective feature at night. The result feels integrated with the client's original vision despite being added relatively late in the project.
Technical information
The installation comprises an Aqua Technics Infinity one-piece composite hot tub/plunge pool measuring 3m in diameter, with a constant water depth of approximately 1.45m and operating volume of approximately 5m³. This was the first Aqua Technics Infinity of its kind installed in the UK. Manufactured in Australia, its construction allows the Infinity to be installed fully inground, semi-sunken or raised depending on the site and required appearance. For this project, the semi-sunken option was selected. The 200mm structural edge beam provides additional shell strength and supports this type of installation, allowing the circular pool to sit proudly within the patio rather than being completely concealed below ground level. Internally, a 400mm-wide bench runs around the full perimeter, creating a substantial 360° seating area, for up to 15 people. An integrated entry step provides straightforward access. The Aqua Technics Infinity incorporates Nano-Graphene throughout its composite layers, increasing flexural strength and supporting its semi-sunken installation. The surface also features patented Pool ColourGuard® technology, helping protect the colour and high-gloss finish against UV and chemical exposure, alongside Microtech® antimicrobial protection for additional surface hygiene. Hydrotherapy is provided by eight water jets and eight air jets, giving a total of 16 jet positions around the spa. The circular seating arrangement makes the Infinity particularly suitable for social use, allowing bathers to sit facing one another rather than following a conventional rectangular hot-tub layout. The Infinity is also highly versatile. It can be operated at hot-tub temperatures for relaxation and hydrotherapy, at conventional pool temperatures for family use, or at lower temperatures as a cold plunge. Heating is provided by a Polytropic Spa Inverter air-source heat pump. Inverter operation allows heating output to respond to demand and provides the temperature control required for year-round use. A Certikin foam heat-retention cover reduces evaporation and heat loss when the spa is not in use. Filtration is provided by a Zodiac 18" filter paired with a Zodiac FloPro 0.5HP single-speed circulation pump, and 1.8kw airblower. The system provides approximately 8m³/h circulation flow. With an approximate operating volume of 5m³, the system achieves a turnover period of approximately 0.6 hours, or 36 minutes, in accordance with the specified requirements of BS EN 17125. The filtration rate is approximately 46m³/m²/h at an operating pressure of approximately 14psi. The hydraulic arrangement incorporates four grey CMP 172GPM suction outlets, one grey Aqua Technics Infinity skimmer and two 63mm grey Ocean/Bosta return outlets. Suction and return pipework has an internal diameter of approximately 55mm. The four-outlet suction arrangement supports the increased hydraulic requirements associated with the spa while providing appropriate safety and redundancy. Primary water treatment is provided by a Certikin in-line chlorinator, offering a straightforward method of maintaining residual disinfectant. Lighting allows the spa to be used safely after dark and works alongside the curved strip lighting incorporated into the surrounding landscaping. Although there were no significant construction problems, the main consideration was integrating the Infinity into a wider renovation that had already been designed. Its compact circular footprint and ability to be installed semi-sunken gave us considerably more flexibility than a conventional inground swimming pool. The completed installation combines the structural qualities and filtration system of a one-piece pool with the heating, seating and hydrotherapy expected from a dedicated hot tub.
